Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is one ofthe most common conditions that affects how children learn and behave. Children with ADHD may struggle with staying focused, sitting still, following instructions, or waiting their turn. While this can be difficult for families, there are many simple and effective strategies that can help.
What is ADHD?
ADHD is not caused by laziness, poor parenting, or a lack ofmotivation. It is a condition that affects how the brain works, especially inareas that help with focus, organization, and self-control. Children with ADHD often need extra support to manage everyday tasks and routines.
Helpful Strategies That Work
1. Create a Clear Routine
Children with ADHD do best when they know what to expect. Set a daily routine and stick to it.
2. Break Big Tasks into Small Steps
A large task can feel overwhelming. Try breaking it down. Instead of saying, "Clean your room," say, "Pick up yourtoys," then "Put your clothes in the hamper."
3. Use Positive Reinforcement
Praise your child for effort, not just results. Try a rewardsystem, like giving stickers or points for good behavior.
4. Add Movement Breaks
Children with ADHD often need to move. Give them shortbreaks during homework or chores. Stretching, jumping jacks, or a quick walk can help them calm down and stay focused.
5. Use Timers and Visual Tools
A timer can show your child how long they need to work on a task.
6. Work with Teachers
Talk with your child’s teacher or school counselor. Ask about classroom support, like sitting near the front of the room or having extra time for assignments. Teamwork between home and school makes a big difference.
When to Get More Help
If your child’s behavior continues to affect daily life even with these strategies, it may be time to talk to a behavioral health provider. Therapy, coaching, and sometimes medication can help children manage their symptoms and feel more confident.
Support for Parents
Raising a child with ADHD can be challenging. It takes patience, creativity, and love. You are not alone. With the right tools and support, you and your child can succeed. Even small changes can lead to big improvements over time.
