AEGD Dental Residency

Christ Community Health Services (CCHS) is a faith-based federally qualified health center that offers a unique residency experience. CCHS is home to a 1-year Advanced Education in General Dentistry Program through NYU Langone as well as the option of participating in an additional 2-years as actual CCHS staff within our Residency (+) Program. CCHS operates five dental centers. The five centers see over 13,000 patients annually from many different cultures and countries around the world. CCHS provides medical, dental, behavioral health, pharmacy, and spiritual health services to the underserved. They provide dental education as well as preventative, diagnostic, and restorative care to those below the poverty line, HIV/AIDS patients, as well as special needs patients.  Residents will have the opportunity to provide services that include preventive, fixed and removeable restorative endodontics, pedo, and oral surgery.  While the site does not place implants, they do the occasional implant restoration.  Christ Community offers a resident the opportunity to serve the underserved as well as the opportunity to become an invaluable clinician.

Advanced Education in General Dentistry Program

  • Multidisciplinary oral health care for various patients, including those with special needs
  • Restorative dentistry, removable & fixed prosthodontics, periodontal therapy, endodontic therapy, oral surgery, evaluation & treatment of dental emergencies, pain & anxiety control utilizing behavioral and/or pharmacologic techniques
  • Clinical and academic mentorship by experienced faculty
  • Implants didactic curriculum and hands-on workshops for sites that currently don't offer implant training
  • Optional Invisalign certification (phase 1)
  • Flexible, on-demand didactic curriculum that qualifies for a fellowship in the Academy of General Dentistry
  • Stipend and generous Benefits (including medical, dental, vision & liability insurance, prescription plan, PTO days, holidays, and continuing education days)
  • State licensing through program pathway in lieu of clinical board exam (CA, CT, NY, OH, VA, WA)
  • Post-training employment opportunities

With a focus on discipleship, community and dental excellence, the [+] Program is a three-year training commitment earning an AEGD certification in Year 1, and gaining valuable experience serving through dentistry in Year 2 and Year 3.

Meet our Staff & Trainees

 AEGD Director- Dr. Elise Shockley

Dr. Elise Shockley graduated from UNC Adams School of Dentistry in 2014. She completed an AEGD with NYU/UTHSC in 2015 and then continued to complete CMDA's Dental Residency Plus program. She has worked for CCHS for 8 years, becoming the residency director for the AEGD in 2019. She is a mom of three and her husband is also Dr. Shockley, a dentist. They enjoy outside time as a family and love international culture/food and travel.

Director Postgraduate Education - Dr. Pamela Harlan-McSwain 

Dr. Pamela Harlan-McSwainis a graduate of Mississippi State University (undergrad B.A. & graduate level MBA) and the University of Memphis 2023 (Ed.D). She has worked at CCHS for the past 2 years at the Director of Post Graduate Education. She is married and has an 11-year-old son. She enjoys traveling, shopping, and spending time with family and friends.

Dental Residency Coordinator - victoria dodson, rda

Victoria Dodson was born and raised here in Memphis. She is a registered dental assistant who graduated from Concorde Career College in 2018. Proudly, Victoria has been with the company for five years total. She began her journeyhere at Christ Community Health Services as intern student completing her clinical rotations. Afterward, she was offered a position as a staff dental assistant. She has climbed the ladder as the lead dental assistant to now the Dental Residency Coordinator. She was offered this position in October 2010. She has been married for two year with two beautiful children. She really enjoys spending time with friends and family just creating fun, enjoyable moments and memories. Victoria is now back in school where she would like to obtain a degree in Business Administration.
