Living with diabetes can feel overwhelming, especially when you’re balancing work, family, and everyday responsibilities. November is a reminder to make time for your health and connect with a care team that can support you.
Managing diabetes involves more than checking blood sugar. Regular visits, preventive exams, and healthy daily habits can help protect your eyes, feet, heart, and overall health.
Key Steps to Keep Your Diabetes in Check
Protect your vision. Schedule a dilated eye exam annually, or follow the schedule recommended by your eye care provider. These exams help identify diabetes-related eye problems.
Keep regular medical appointments. Visit your provider even when you feel well. These visits are a chance to review your medicines, discuss concerns, and adjust your care plan. Ask how often you should return based on your needs.
Know your HbA1c. Also called A1C, this blood test shows your average blood sugar over about three months. Ask your provider about your personal goal and testing schedule.
Manage your blood pressure. Blood pressure is an important part of diabetes care. Work with your provider to set a goal and discuss steps to help you reach it.
Care for your feet. Get a complete foot exam at least annually, or more often if recommended. Check your feet daily and promptly report sores, blisters, redness, swelling, or other changes.
Build healthy daily habits. Choose balanced meals, drink water, and find physical activities you enjoy. Work with your care team on an eating and activity plan that fits your health, abilities, and routine. Take medicines as prescribed.
