The start of a new school year is a great time to set clear expectations at home. One of the best ways to guide your child’s behavior is through consistent use of rewards and consequences.
Tips for Rewards:
- Be specific and prompt. Praise effort and improvement.
- Use rewards your child values. These can be activities, privileges, or time with you.
- Visual tools like charts help track progress and encourage consistency.
Tips for Consequences:
- Stay calm and consistent. Explain the reason for the consequence.
- Make consequences related to the behavior. For example, if chores aren’t done, screen time is paused.
- Use consequences as a teaching moment, not a punishment.
Keep It Balanced:
Too many negative consequences can discourage a child. Focus on a mix of positive reinforcement and correction. Children respond best when they understand the expectations and feel supported.
Creating structure at home helps kids grow emotionally and socially. If you need help developing a plan for your child, we’re here to support you.
