ADHD Interventions That Support Success in School

As children settle into the school year, some may struggle to keep up with classroom demands. For children with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), staying focused, organized, and emotionally regulated in a busy school setting can be difficult. Thankfully, there are effective strategies parents and teachers can use to support success.

Practical Classroom Supports

Preferential Seating
Place the student near the front or away from distractions such as windows or noisy classmates.

Clear and Simple Instructions
Break tasks into smaller steps and check for understanding. Visual aids or written directions can provide extra clarity.

Positive Behavior Plans
Recognize effort with praise, reward systems, or privileges that motivate the student to stay on track.

Movement Breaks
Short, scheduled breaks for physical activity can help students recharge and improve focus throughout the day.

Helpful Habits at Home

  • Set regular routines for homework and bedtime.
  • Limit distractions during study time.
  • Help your child organize supplies and materials using color-coding or labeled folders.
  • Celebrate progress along the way, not just final results.

Teamwork Matters

Children thrive when parents, teachers, and behavioral health professionals work together. Collaboration ensures consistent strategies across school and home. If your child has not been evaluated, talk to your pediatrician or counselor about screening options for ADHD.

With patience, structure, and support, children with ADHD can build the tools they need to thrive both academically and emotionally.
