Men's Health Month: Investing in Your Health Today for a Better Tomorrow

Christ Community Health Services

June is Men's Health Month, a time to encourage men to take charge of their physical and mental health and make wellness a priority.

Many men spend their lives caring for others, whether as fathers, husbands, sons, friends, or caregivers. Unfortunately, they often put their own health last. Men's Health Month serves as an important reminder that taking care of yourself is not selfish. It is one of the best investments you can make for your family, your future, and your quality of life.

For Christ Community Health Services Medication Therapy Management (MTM) Pharmacist Cedric Foster, men's health is personal.

"Health is a crown the healthy wear, that only the sick can see."

Cedric's commitment to healthy living was shaped by watching loved ones struggle with serious health conditions.

"From childhood to adulthood, I observed my father's and grandparents' struggles with health," Cedric said. "My father was a smoker and dealt with hypertension, high cholesterol, and kidney disease, while both grandparents suffered strokes. My father went through open-heart surgery, and my grandparents received home care from my mother and aunt, both of whom are nurses, for over two decades."

Although his family had the knowledge and resources to help care for them, the experience taught him an important lesson.

"Although our family was equipped to support their care through these situations, lifespan exceeded healthspan, and their last years were not pleasant. These moments made me prioritize my health so that I could positively influence our family's next generation."

Four Ways Men Can Prioritize Their Health

Schedule Preventive Checkups

One of the most important things men can do is see a healthcare provider regularly. Preventive visits can help identify health concerns such as high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, and certain cancers before symptoms appear. Early detection often leads to better outcomes and more treatment options.

Stay Physically Active

Regular exercise improves heart health, reduces stress, helps maintain a healthy weight, and lowers the risk of many chronic diseases.

Eat a Nutrient-Rich Diet

What you eat directly impacts your overall health. Focus on eating a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats while limiting processed foods, excess sodium, and sugary drinks.

Prioritize Mental Health

Mental health is just as important as physical health. Stress, anxiety, depression, and other mental health concerns affect millions of men each year.

It's Never Too Late

Cedric encourages men to view healthy living as an act of self-respect and self-care.

"How we take care of our bodies shows the love we have for ourselves, so I ask that every man show more love to themselves. It is never too late to make a change."

This Men's Health Month, take time to schedule that appointment, start a new exercise routine, make healthier food choices, or have an honest conversation about your mental health. The steps you take today can help you enjoy a healthier tomorrow.
