May is National Physical Fitness and Sports Month, and Dr. Reginique Green, Chief Clinical Officer and board-certified Family Physician at Christ Community Health Services, says it is the perfect time for individuals and families to focus on becoming more active.
“Physical activity is one of the best things people can do for their health,” said Dr. Green. “It does not have to be complicated or expensive. Simple activities like walking, stretching, dancing, riding bikes, or playing outside with your children can make a real difference.”
Dr. Green explained that staying active benefits both physical and mental health. Regular movement can help improve heart health, strengthen muscles and bones, increase energy levels, reduce stress, and improve sleep.
“Many people think they need to spend hours in the gym to see results, but that is simply not true,” Dr. Green shared. “Small changes throughout the day can add up. Even several short periods of activity can be just as effective as one long workout session.”
According to Dr. Green, children should get at least 60 minutes of physical activity each day, while adults should aim for at least 30 minutes daily.
“One of the best ways to stay motivated is to make fitness a family activity,” she said. “When families walk together, play sports together, or spend time outdoors together, they are not only improving their health, they are also strengthening their relationships and creating lifelong healthy habits.”
Dr. Green also encouraged people to reduce screen time and find opportunities to move more throughout the day.
“Take the stairs when you can, park farther away from the store, go for an evening walk, or turn on music and dance in the living room,” she said. “Every step matters.”
As National Physical Fitness and Sports Month continues, Dr. Green hopes people will remember that being active is about progress, not perfection.
“The goal is not to be perfect,” Dr. Green said. “The goal is to keep moving, take care of your body, and build healthier habits one day at a time.”
