The ACE Awareness Foundation is leading the effort in Memphis to increase public understanding of the deep and long-lasting impact childhood trauma can have across the life span and to develop models that prevent toxic stress or lessen its effect on children and their families.
The foundation’s signature initiative for addressing adverse childhood experiences, or ACEs, is its Universal Parenting Places (UPPs). These judgment-free zones are places where parents, grandparents, and other caregivers receive professional counseling with a licensed therapist, information, emotional support, and referrals for family-related issues and concerns, no matter how small — and at no cost.
In the same way that visits to the pediatrician provide answers to common medical questions that help parents to prevent physical disease, the UPPs utilize the latest findings from brain science and family therapy to provide state-of-the-art solutions to common concerns affecting children’s social emotional health. The program is a preventive, relationship-based opportunity for parents and caregivers to get individual answers to questions about common challenges and sources of stress that affect them and their children, including:
- Temper tantrums
- Positive discipline strategies
- Conflict between parents, such as divorce
- Bullying and aggression
- Peer or sibling problems
- School adjustment issues
- Welcoming a new baby or entering into a blended family
- New mothers/fathers feeling overwhelmed or depressed
Designed to be therapeutic and educational, as well as inviting and appealing to all kinds of families, the UPPs are situated in four trusted, accessible locations in Memphis, and another in Leland, Mississippi. Individual counseling is the primary way the sites help parents address ACEs. However, each UPP incorporates interactive arts — improvisational theater, music, drum circles, and exercise classes — into some of its stress-reducing, skill-building group sessions through relationships with community partners.
